Congratulations! You’ve found Rent Manual Transmission, your source for information on finding rental cars with manual transmissions.
As you may well know, renting these cars has become an increasingly difficult proposition in recent years for a number of reasons. Obviously, consumer preference has shifted dramatically toward automatic transmissions, which in turn, has meant that the stick shift has fallen out of favor. In addition to this, there are several reasons why manual transmissions have become less attractive in the eyes of the rental companies. To begin with, these cars cost more to maintain. Not because the transmissions are costlier, more complicated, etc., but because fewer drivers are able to operate these cars anymore, which leads to increased wear and tear, and thus, more maintenance.
Beyond simple maintenance issues, though, there are a number of other reasons why rental agencies are less inclined to rent these automobiles. As previously mentioned, the fact that fewer drivers are able to operate manual transmissions leads to a rather glaring problem in the eyes of rental companies… liability. Less experienced/qualified drivers means an increased probability of collision, and means that the car rental companies will have to pay more to insure their fleet of cars, not an enticing proposition.
So, that is the situation as it stands. Today, it is very difficult to rent a car with manual transmission. Hopefully, RentAManual.com will help make it easier for those of us still interested in enjoying the experience of driving.
Please check back often as we will be updating our site frequently. Make sure to check out our new search feature, and for special deals from our partners.
And if you are looking to insure a new driver, I’d suggest you check out car insurance for teenagers – lots of helpful advice.
Daughter-in-law never learned to use a standard trans. vehicle. She is going to Europe. Where do we find a rental office between Fort Lauderdale, FL to Coral Springs, FL? What is the cost per day? What type of vehicle are avail.? Thank you.
From what I’ve heard, you’re best off going with an independent agency in Florida. Call ahead to ensure that they’ve got what you’re looking for, and negotiate your price over the phone. None of the big guys will have a manual, so go with the small shops, sorry I don’t have a specific vendor to point you to, best of luck.
I believe that people trying to rent a car for instruction is a factor in killing manual transmission cars as a rental proposition. The outfits that rent out exotic sports cars make it quite clear that their cars are not to be used for driving instruction. I live in Virginia and I believe the nearest driver’s education school that has stick shift instruction is in Connecticut.
i am interested in renting 100,000 manual transmission cars for a road trip across the coutry with me and 99,999 of my closest friends. does ford still make 4 speed mustangs? ideally we would have mutliple colours and engine sizes. please advise on how to approach. i would be happy to pay a premium if you could arrange for them to delivered to claremont, california by 12.31.2012, the day we plan to embark on our journey. thank you and godspeed.
This website is great! With all the good info on this site, I was able to rent a manion last week in Coral Springs, FL. A jacuzzi, a study, a 3 car garage–this place had it all! I felt like a billionaire for a weekend, and all because I read howtorentamansion.com! Next year, I just might try to rent a mansion in Baja, Mexico. Could you please add an international section?
Dear How to Rent a Manual dot com,
I was travelling in Australia last month, and I couldn’t believe how many companies rented manuals! It was like I’d died and gone to manual heaven. I have never driven a manual before, but on the encouragement of this website, I drove three in one day! The first two broke down after I accidentally shifted into “R” going about 80 km/hr, but the third drove like a charm. Thanks for all the help and good info! Could you please add an international section?

I’ve rented manuals all of my life, but never was I more impressed by a manual car rental company than I was last week when I was visiting my son in Tucson, AZ. It’s called First-Class Rentals. They rent every model you would expect to see at an Avis or a Hertz, except they’re all standard transmission. I only rent manual when I travel, so I know that First-Class rentals is something special. They also have offices in Phoenix, Albequerque, Santa Fe and Needles.
